Federal MP Bruce Scott Slams Wind Power

The reverberations from the National Rally continue with Federal MP, Bruce Scott coming out hard against the wind power fraud.

The Great Scott – in his natural habitat.

STT’s pretty sure that the Great Scott won’t be backing wind power in the next Coalition led Parliament. But we hear that Bruce is a big fan of water – and pretty keen on REALLY drought proofing Australia – which ain’t done with fans – it’s done with dams.  Oh – almost forgot – when you’ve got water and a hill you get cheap, clean and reliable sparks forever.

Wind Farms ‘A Fraud’: MP
South Burnett Times
21 June 2013

The proposed Coopers Gap wind farm – and other wind power projects – have been labelled “wind power fraud” by Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott.

Addressing South Burnett landholders who had travelled to Canberra for an anti-wind farm rally this week, Mr Scott slammed wind power as “inefficient, costly and a feel-good option that doesn’t deliver”.

“Wind farms are dividing communities in my electorate,” Mr Scott said.

He said the CSIRO had estimated the “levelled” cost of wind power at $168/MWh, compared with coal at $80MW/h.

“We need to be smart about green energy but Australia simply can’t afford to support wind power that doesn’t deliver,” Mr Scott said.

“The reality is that the weather is the driving force of a turbine because they don’t generate electricity when the wind speed is too high or too low.

“Wind power is just a feel-good option for electricity. It is not a clean, green source of energy as turbines require powered generators which negate any reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

“There’s also the human cost with reports of headaches, dizziness, deep nervous fatigue, symptoms similar to seasickness as well as irritability, depression, concentration and sleep problems experienced by those who live close to a wind farm.

“Wind farms also take up large parcels of agricultural land which are used for food production.

“Australia can’t afford the carbon tax and we certainly cannot afford to spend billions of dollars to subsidise this inefficient, intermittent, expensive wind power fraud.”

The anti-wind farm rally, led by broadcaster Alan Jones in front of Parliament House, attracted about 200 people, including the delegation from Coopers Gap.

A few hours later, a pro-wind farm rally held in the Canberra CBD attracted about 400 people.

Cooranga North Concerned Citizens Group (CNCCG) spokesman Bryan Lyons believes he knows the reason why the Coopers Gap project seems to be stalled.

Mr Lyons, who will have a turbine constructed on the boundary of his property if the project goes ahead, told southburnett.com.au the anti-wind farm group has correspondence on file from the State Government which it believes confirms that wind farms in Queensland would be subject to the provisions of the Environmental Protection (Noise) Policy 2008.

This Queensland policy states that noise levels inside a dwelling at night should be no more than 30dB(A) for health and well-bring, and the ability to sleep.

However, he said AGL was using the South Australian Wind Farms Environmental Noise Guidelines for the Coopers Gap project. This sets 40dB(A) as the maximum external noise level for farming land of the type in the Cooranga North / Boyneside area.

The CNCCG hired an independent acoustic consultant to conduct tests on site at three properties at Coopers Gap to determine the sound differences in dB(A) from outside the structures to inside the bedrooms (with the windows open).

The differences ranged from – 1.2dB(A) (ie the sound was greater inside the bedroom) to 4.1dB(A).

At the highest level of attenuation, the sound decrease from 40dB(A) would still be greater than the 30dB(A) allowed in Queensland, Mr Lyons said.

He said several turbine hosts (ie landholders who have agreed to have turbines erected on their land) had approached AGL to ask them to conduct their own acoustic tests to determine if the project would be legal, but so far there had been no response.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington told southburnett.com.au she would support any call by the local community for AGL to do acoustic tests.

No Word On Project

There has been no further progress on the AGL project at Coopers Gap – which has divided the Cooranga North / Boyneside community – and no development applications have been lodged as yet with the South Burnett Regional Council.

However, AGL insists the project is still happening.

It recently sponsored a visit interstate by turbine hosts to view another wind farm project.

It is also still hosting regular Community Consultative Committee meetings around the region.

The anti-wind farm group, the Cooranga North Concerned Citizens Group, is still boycotting these meetings, with spokesman Bryan Lyons saying they are just pro-wind farm propaganda.

The most recent was held at Cooranga North Community Hall on Thursday.
South Burnett Times

Not a bad take on proceedings in the Capital – save it fell for the “act-on-wank” hash-addled-tale about the numbers at the Rally.   But of more importance is the FACT that Bruce will be on the winning side in September and sit in a party room where the people with sympathy for giant fans can be comfortably counted on one hand. Now that’s a FACT that STT is more than happy to act on.

No matter how hard he tried he couldn’t get more than 3.

  1. WindFraud Investigator says:

Well done Bruce Scott for acknowledging the human cost! For listening to the stories of real people adversely affected by this dishonest and unscrupulous industry.

It is well known that ‘ complaints’ data and ‘prescription data’ in any population health study can be inconclusive, and of limited, if any use, in determining causation in individual subjects without associated medical and environmental assessment of subjects and their surroundings. Especially when much of that data is from industry sources! The fact that recent studies positing a psychogenic hypothesis and demeaning affected people have received widespread publicity and ‘acceptance’ says more about their marketing and promotion than a critical analysis of their flawed methodology and conclusions.

Similarly, literature reviews of the standard carried out by NH&MRC in 2010 when the literature cited has little if any reference to independant medical studies of affected individuals are not strong evidence. Literature reviews of acoustic research are not a substitute for controlled independant scientific medical studies. That the NHMRC rapid review of 2010 referred extensively to industry affiliated research and cited a blog of one of its initially anonymous ‘peer’ reviewers, and that the other reviewer was an acoustician with long standing close association with the wind industry raises serious questions of the probity of the NH&MRC. It doesn’t lead one to have faith in the independence and rigor of the review currently underway.

It’s time the scientific charade of the wind industry is seen and named for what it is by mainstream media ie spin and propaganda. It is way past time that the independent medical acoustic scientific research of affected individuals was carried out. It was recommended by the Australian Senate Committee chaired by the Greens 2 years ago! I truly hope the future coalition government stick to their promise of independent medical research.

And that the NH&MRC has a review of its own.

Thankyou to Bruce and the other politicians who supported the STT rally.

  2. Bruce Scott Federal MP, A BIG THANK YOU!

We at Cooranga North could not of said it better. These industrial wind turbines have destroyed the health of a lot of people that live anywere near the useless things, plus they are costing the earth (planet) to operate with all the money it takes to prop them up.

  3. The GREAT Scott indeed..more power to you Bruce Scott MP
