Stop These Things’ Weekly Round Up: 23 August 2026

One central theme in the grand wind and solar ‘transition’ myth is that millions of solar panels and wind turbines are “replacing” conventional generators, like gas or coal-fired power plants.

The reality is that (occasionally generated) wind and solar momentarily “displace” power that conventional generators are able to deliver around-the-clock, whatever the weather for a fraction of the massive cost associated with subsidised wind and solar. And the reason for that are the government mandates and massive subsidies, which have created  a distorted power market that “prefers” wind and solar over the reliable stuff that comes from coal-fired or gas-fired power plants.

Which brings us to this week’s roundup.

Eric Worrall reports on the situation in Australia, where the potential demand from new AI data centres has revealed the rather obvious fact that those centres require power without interruption. And that means coal-fired power.

Whatever “social licence” the wind and solar industries had, disappeared long ago. Now, thanks to (completely unnecessary) large-scale transmission projects rural communities on the war path. These massive, high voltage lines, ripping Australia’s farming heartland apart, are unnecessary because they’re only purpose is to shunt wind or solar power from state to state around a grid that doesn’t need any of it. Which is just another reason why real farmers are on the brink of revolt, as Oscar Godsell reports.

The team from Jo Nova point out that the Chinese are coming to grips with the completely pointless nature of having power generated when you don’t need it – and having a power system that simply can’t deliver, when you do.
