Germany’s Energiewende ‘Blown’ Away: Mutti Merkel’s Mauling Threatens Doom for Subsidised Wind & Solar

FDP win means an end to the chaos is in sight.

Germany’s love affair with wind turbines and solar panels has clearly turned sour.

During the winter just gone, with a total collapse in wind and solar power  output, Germany had to scramble to keep its lights on using coal-fired power plants, resurrected to deal with a grid on the brink of collapse and nuclear power imported from France.

Rocketing power prices have also taken their toll on the German sense of humour.

As with every community forced to live with these things, Germans are just as hostile: constant exposure to turbine generated low-frequency noise and infrasound is enough to rattle the resolve of even the most stoic.

And now that the victims realise that the whole thing is an enormous fraud, the political tide has turned.

No longer do vanity signalling Greens hold sway. Now, it’s the Free Democrats who are attracting not just attention, but votes, simply because they are ready to call wind power for what it is.

The Greens have lost their grip on the game; and their renewable rent-seeking benefactors aren’t happy about it.

The fallout from Germany’s recent election does not augur well for Germany’s wind and sun worshippers.

Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union performed dismally, leaving her ‘Grand Coalition’ in tatters.

The dominant CDU, CSU and SPD all saw their stocks sink to new lows, while the FDP ‘Free Democrats’ emerged as a force to be reckoned with.

How Germany is governed from here, is a matter of some uncertainty. However, given that Merkel will need to deal with Christian Lindner’s Free Democrats, one thing is certain: no longer will Germany’s wind and solar industries be treated like some rare and endangered species. To the contrary, its renewables rent-seekers can expect to be targeted with a vengeance.

Germany’s Green Energy Project Close To Death: “EEG Feed-In Act Has Failed … Has To Go!”

Angela Merkel’s grand coalition government with the opposition SPD socialist party took a massive beating in last Sunday’s election, with both her CDU/CSU party and the coalition partner SPD socialist party coming in at post-war historic lows.

Since then the SPD has announced it is no longer interested in continuing the grand coalition and instead will take the helm as the opposition force. The comfy, low-opposition government is over. This has got Merkel scrambling to find new partners to form a new government. Her only option: forming a coalition with the business-friendly FDP free democrats – and the environmentalist Greens. That is not going to be easy by any means.

Merkel potential coalition partner cold on subsidies for renewables

Merkel of course would have no problems governing together with the greens, and the massive state media apparatus is already promoting it with abandon.

But there are chasms of difference between the potential coalition parties on a number of issues, especially on issue of renewable energy subsidies.

Yesterday at the leftist, Berlin-based Tagesspiegel here, FDP party boss Christian Lindner left a commentary where he “demands the end of the EEG feed-in reform act”. According to Lindner, Germany’s focus has been “religiously excessive” on climate protection “instead of on price and supply stability”. For too long have the consumers and industry been sacrificed at the altar of Climatism, and done so with no results.

“Green energies have failed”

According to Lindner:

“The project of the century Energiewende [transition to green energies] has failed. None of the agreed targets will be reached. Climate protection is stalled, energy prices are rising and they are burdening us as electricity consumers, just as they are industry and the middle class. And not least of all it is becoming increasingly difficult to guarantee a secure power supply during the winter months.”

Worse than former communist East Germany

Lindner adds that even Communist East Germany could not have designed the system to be any worse. Lindner then blasted the country’s high electricity prices and their detrimental impact on German competitiveness, writing that many companies have left the country. Moreover conventional power plants that are forced to run part time are no longer profitable, Prices he says, will continue to rise and that there is no end in sight.

24 billion euro annual burden, time to pull the plug

Lindner also claims that government reforms to the feed-in act have “gone out of control” and that this is burdening the German consumers to the tune of 24 billion euros annually, or more than 300 euros a year for a family of four.

Lindner is calling for scrapping the current feed-in act and replacing it altogether from scratch, saying what is needed is a Europe-wide energy policy and power grid. Secondly, he says that renewable energies must stop being subsidized and that Europe should take its time to reduce CO2.

According to Lindner: “The EEG [feed-in act] no longer works and it is time to pull the plug”.

To the contrary, the Greens are demanding that green energy be expanded even more rapidly and that diesel engines be banned by 2030. The split between the two potential junior coalition parties seems unsolvable, so much so that German flagship daily Die Welt here wrote that Lindner has even poured cold water on the idea of a CDU/CSU/Green/FDP coalition government.

That could mean that the days of Angela Merkel may be numbered, and those of the Energiewende, as well.

Gas and oil still very much the future

The dream of reaching near zero CO2 emissions in Germany and worldwide is looking increasingly like pie-in-the-sky. The industry association representing purchasing and logistics in Germany writes here that oil and gas will continue to dominate the energy market even in 2050. Though it foresees growth of green energy in the future, it will be modest at best:

Although renewable energies will increase their share among the overall energy mix, the share of gas of oil in the global energy supply will fall 9% by 2050, from 53% today to 44%.”

In other words, should the global economy double by 2050, the consumption of fossil fuels will be more in 2050 than it is today.

  1. Terry Conn says:

No doubt Jackie, that the wind industry scam has been ‘fraudulent’ and would in all probability be successfully sued for obtaining money by false pretences in the normal free enterprise commercial world, BUT because it has all been done pursuant to federal legislation (the RET and REC system) then the ‘fraud’ has been perfectly legal even though in conflict with National Electricity Law. Those at the top of the list for perpetrating this fraud are our elected representatives and given the advice they received from the many who foresaw this tragedy makes them morally culpable if nothing else – how extraordinary it is that they are still persisting with supporting the scam. In respect to no other issue in the history of Australia has our political system been such a monumental failure and if it persists will, not may, actually destroy the nation from being a ‘first’ world nation to a ‘third’ world nation within a decade or less – it is inevitable, as the facts and figures continually posted by STT attest.

  2. Jackie Rovensky says:

Acceptance of failure is very difficult but not accepting it produces far more difficulties.
Acceptance of failure is something we all have to face at sometime or another, for Politicians and zealots it is something they never wish to acknowledge – but they have to when it is so important that not doing so will see the demise of a Nations viability to look after its people and their interests.
It is now time for ‘the powers that be’ to accept the experiment is over, that they handled the situation badly, that they did not think before acting, that they have not had the interests of their people and nation at front and centre, that they were scammed, that they failed to listen to warnings, that they have been hopelessly gullible to the smarmy sales pitch of a gluttonous money hungry industry, that has/had no interest in anything or anyone but themselves and the profits it could secrete away.
Any other business that used such ‘hard sell’ tactics as this industry to sell something which they were well aware they would never be able to deliver on, would be brought before the courts to face fraud charges – at the very least.
It is now time for our Federal and State Governments and all politicians both in office and in opposition to accept this industry which has been supported by the public purse has been a complete failure with respect to what the industry promised. That it has caused immense cost to the Public Purse, to businesses, industry and individual household expenses and must now be cut free from all the support it has received, and if it cannot survive so be it.
After all it has caused misery and harm to thousands of people around this country and the world on the back of false promises.
In the mean time Governments have to place their support around energy producers who can provide base-load energy at a cost commensurate with the ability of industries and businesses to operate at a profit, and for households to be able to function in a modern society without having to resort to making choices between living in a modern society and going bankrupt or living a life of a pre-industrialisation surf.
Governments need to accept failure and quickly return a form of reliable energy supply to the Nation so it can once again flourish and return to being the ‘Lucky Country’.
Are you up to the challenge Mr Turnbull????

  4. THE TRUTH FROM EUROPE IS NOT BEING SHARED AND MADE PUBLIC IN U.S. YOU MUST ASK WHY. WE DO NOT NEED TO EXPERIENCE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GERMANY AND SO MANY OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, AND AUSTRALIA. WE MUST LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES. WE MUST MAKE THEIR MISTAKES KNOWN. PLEASE SHARE AND “STOP THESE THINGS” …Industrial wind turbines are harmful to all in their path in many, many ways.

  5. Give nukes a chance.
