The bigger they come, the harder they fall and in terms of subsidised wind and solar catastrophes, there’s none bigger than Germany.
Deutschland was once held up by the wind and sun cult as the ‘green energy’ poster child. Somehow sunshine and breezes would power Europe’s industrial power house? Trouble was the weather has a horrible habit of raining on the cult’s parade.
As is their wont, the Germans even coined a word to mark the occasion: “Dunkelflaute”, which covers the dark, still weather that leaves wind turbines and solar panels with little to do and everyone else with the bill.
Which brings us to this week’s roundup.
Charles Rotter reports on how yet another burst of calm and cloudy weather across Europe sent power prices into orbit in Germany.

Vijay Jayaraj gives a report to similar effect from his home State, Tamil Nadu – where the calm weather that follows the end of the monsoon has seen wind power output collapse, allowing the owners of fast-start gas turbines to charge extortionate rates and make out like bandits.

Oliver Wright reports from the UK on Labour’s efforts to salvage a sinking ship: as the cost of massive subsidies mounts – including paying wind power outfits billions to produce nothing at all – their Energy/Climate/Net Zero Ministers reckon they can pull rein on the runaway train they backed from the beginning.

We closeout with 2 related X posts by Bjorn Lomberg, who contrasts Denmark’s massive “investment” in utterly pointless wind power and Sweden’s truly bang-for-buck investment in ever ready nuclear.
Stay tuned, STT will be back next week with more.
